Truth Will Out

"Nicer area too"- said [livejournal.com profile] davesmusictank, comparing the South East with the North West and I found I had to agree- and now I'm feeling disloyal. Greater Manchester has been my adopted home for nearly 40 years and I've always tried to stand up for it but...

...it lacks two things I love:

1 Medieval buildings
2 Seaside.

We're planning to drive down to Hastings this afternoon- a short run through lovely countryside- and Hastings has both.

I do miss the seaside something rotten, I have to say. Though of course there is plenty of seaside in the North-West, just not in Cottonopolis.

I particularly like Crosby- where the Gorms are.

I will say, though, that Manchester is fab for the young, the broke and the non-driver. The Home Counties have their charm, but I have no idea how people live there without cars and/or a hefty amount of cash.

We've been researching this. The Medway towns- Rochester, Chatham, Gravesend- are cheap and well served by public transport. Sheppey is very cheap. Hastings- where we were this afternoon- is reasonably cheap- and has a raffish, bohemian vibe.

Ooh, interesting! I am glad to hear of seaside towns that are raffish rather than depressing. Good luck in your searching.
