Towns Beginning With M

When Ailz couldn't get to sleep last night she started making a list of British towns beginning with "M".

Manchester, Middleton, Malton, Macclesfield...

Once you start that sort of thing it's very hard to stop.

Maidstone, Malborough, Middlesborough, Mansfield...

For a short while I beat insomnia by counting by 17's.

That would do my head in. I'm hopeless at maths.

I often put myself to sleep composing LJ posts.

Oh me too - I think that's why it worked. Brain switched right off!

Melton Mowbray (M squared!) Matlock, Machynlleth, Mildenhall, Moffat

You've got pork pies on the brain, haven't you! By the way, I agree; they're horrid things.

I actually knew they were vile. Sometimes I don't even listen to myself.

I do that, except in my version my lists are usually alphabetical. So my list of British towns would go Aberdeen, Bristol, Cardiff, etc. Some letters are obviously harder than others, and I've observed that although I usually succeed in tackling the first couple of 'tricky' ones (I, J) I often fall asleep during the third (Q). I think that once the basic task of making a list has shut down other thoughts, the speculative casting around of the mind in the face of a difficult letter then creates the blank space which you need to actually fall asleep.

I compose LJ posts and book reviews in my head. I find that usually works.

Sometimes I even remember them in the morning.

Oh, I do the alphabetical version too! Usually with dog breeds, or Pokemon, or titles of Bob Dylan songs.

Yes!

If this were a competition you'd have just won it.

I spent my childhood in Croydon- and Mitcham was a place we talked about but never visited.

What I actually do when I can't sleep is I travel journeys in my head: country walks, drive to work, that sort of thing. I'm always asleep before I arrive.
