Sounds like you have some good equipment. I had a crappy phone camera with no flash and was trying to take a picture of a black colleague with a black dress against a wood-panelled backdrop. I got a floating pair of eyes and that was it!

I have a fairly basic camera- and edit the pictures in the computer. A recent up-date- which has just appeared- allows me to play around with filters. A red filter is great for making sense of black skin.
