Betjeman's Banana Blush and its sequels feature John Betjeman reading his own poems to musical accompaniment by Jim Parker. We were listening to them in the car yesterday. Betjeman's verse runs up and down the scale from despair to ecstasy without ever ceasing to be wryly funny and Parker's music is tuneful and witty. Altogether a delight. Banana Blush is now forty years old. Forty years old!

We had an easy run, without hold-ups, stopping off in Leicester to see Alice, Mab and Ivy. Ivy is full of words (see previous post).

It seems to have kept on raining in West Kent. I walked across the lower field last night and it was even boggier than before. Jo's carer has done a grand job. The house is tidier and cleaner than I've ever known it.

I dreamed I was walking through a town centre that had been playfully engineered and painted so as to be full of optical illusions and false perspectives. It was very beautiful (I was snapping away with my camera, of course) but I got lost in it and couldn't find my way out.
