Conversations with my mother go round in circles because by the time they're several sentences old she's forgotten how they began.

Shane keeps turning up. Yesterday, before the weather closed him down, he was up on the roof patching the chimneys. Today he's undercover, repairing the rotted wood in the garage.

Ailz says snowdrop bulbs change hands for £700. If that's true- and I have difficulty believing it- we've got a small fortune stashed away in the (grassy) bank outside the dining room windows.

Maybe she was confusing them with tulips.

I don't think so. She read it in The Mail.

Oh, well, if it's in the Mail it must be true! :)

No, it's a thing -- there are snowdrop walks over here, too. Here's one piece, with a link to a charming column in the Telegraph.

And there was I thinking they were just common or garden wild flowers.

The common ones still are, I think. There are similar phenomena with other plants. Hippeastrum (aka amaryllis), for instance. You can get ordinary bulbs at Tesco's for five pounds or so -- or you can pay hundreds for rare species or exotic crosses. Don't get me started on orchids...
