Romney Marsh

According to my friend the Judge, the Rank Organization- which was filming Dr Syn on location- painted the box pews in Old Romney Church a pale pink because the white paint dazzled the camera. When filming was over Rank offered to restore the original colour but the parishioners asked them not to because the pink was so lovely- as it is. Apart from the pink paint Old Romney church looks as if no-one has touched it since the 18th century.

Old Romney Church

We came to Old Romney at the end of an afternoon spent bimbling about in the Marsh. The weather was as fine as it ever is in February. There was water in the fields but the roads were clear.

I think I could live in Dymchurch.

I'll be down that way with the bike club tomorrow, weather permitting!

Excellent.

It is fun to see how TV or film crews will redecorate a location for a shoot. I've encountered two restaurants that received new tabletop surfaces for brief scenes in a TV commercial or a movie.

Funny how the approaches differ. You and I fret over getting photos of what exists regardless of how it suits the camera, but the film world changes the subject to suit their equipment.

I think I would enjoy a visit to Dymchurch.

Antonioni used to repaint whole streets to fit the mood of his movies.

What a wonderful church - I do love to see box pews and galleries surviving...

The Victorians very largely kept their mitts off the Romney Marsh churches.

That is lovely. The pink isn't bad at all.

The shore photo is beautiful.

Box pews? Never saw those before!

They came in in the 16th century. Families used to pay rent on them. The grandest were set up as little rooms and some even had fireplaces. The Victorians found them socially divisive and did their best to get rid of them.
