Alistair McAlpine

Someone should have taken him on in the courts- but nobody did- and the consequence was the shutting down of public debate on a matter of the gravest importance. Instead of talking about the organized abuse of children we found ourselves talking about the wrong done to the reputation of a single, rich old man. I have little doubt this was exactly what he intended. His huffing and puffing went beyond what was needed for the defence of his own good name and threw a protective cloak around a bunch of men of his own class and circle of acquaintance whom he must have known to be guilty.

This guy? Certainly nothing more here than the idea of him being a wealthy eccentric. Oh, except the reference to being one of Thatcher's bastards.

He was a Falstaffian figure- high-rolling, charismatic, greedy, unprincipled.
