My mother was up at five, needing attention. I find it hard to get back to sleep after this kind of awakening.

Hygiene becomes an issue. We're taking up the bathroom carpet and replacing it with vinyl. Should we be thinking of doing the same with my mother's bedroom carpet? I've had to give the area around the commode a good scrubbing  twice this week.

I've been keeping the bird food in the garage. This morning I found a mouse had made itself a nest among the fat balls. It's a plump,, sleek little mouse. I've moved the bulk of the food into the house, but I'm leaving the nest intact.

Well, these days vinyl is pretty soft on the feet, and not cold to stand on. I'd certainly think about it. Having it installed might be a bit disruptive though.

We have put rag carpets everywhere my father might have hygiene problems, the kind you can just throw in the washing machine. I don´t know if you have them in the UK.. they look like that:

We had these issues with my MiL in the last months and we couldn't always be there being a long way off, so do the best you can and if vinyl flooring helps then go for it. We relied on a (very good) home help when we couldn't be there and she was worth every penny- worth her weight in gold, indeed.

It's the disruption that bothers us most. My mother won't like having workmen in and the house at sixes and sevens.

Yeah- we buy them for ourselves from Ikea. I don't think they're an option for my mother though; there'd be a danger of her tripping over them.

I think vinyl in the bedroom is a last resort. My mother wouldn't be keen (as much as anything because she hates spending money) and the disruption would upset her. For the time being I think we need to regard the "accidents" as just that and hope they won't be repeated.

If these "accidents" continue then i would certainly invest in vunyl flooring.

I suppose she would be completely offended by the idea of wearing an adult "pull up" (more like training pants than a diaper).

There is something you can do to carpets--some sort of treatment meant for pet accidents--that keeps the urine from soaking in. Instead it beads up on the top of the carpet fibers for easy clean up. I forget what it is called--perhaps Scotch Guard? But any carpet place should be able to inform you.

Mice are cute. Such industrious little creatures.

maybe you could have a piece precut to fit
and just roll it in temporarily?

throw rugs do get to be a problem

Carpet in the bathroom is patently a bad idea. I prefer vinyl and then little area rugs that can be picked up and washed, and eventually thrown away.

Scotch Guard is right, I think. I came across it when I was working in nursing homes.

I like mice. I refuse to set traps.

People who carpet bathrooms or kitchens are insanely optimistic. They just assume they will never drop an egg or have a really horrific case of diarrhea.

Knowing myself as well as I do, I would NEVER carpet either area. Vinyl cleans up so much easier!

there are the rugs with the rubbery bottoms that might do
best way to clean them is at a car wash with the hose
but its too cold for that
