Sherlock Holmes is an inhuman calculating machine, right? Well, no, that's just what he's like on the outside. Underneath he's this misunderstood soul who feels his loneliness deeply and loves his buddy with a love that  is very wonderful, passing the love of women- and don't you just want to gather him up in your Cumberbitchy arms and reassure him and make it all better!

This isn't drama- it's fan-fiction.

Oh, and by the way, the mystery he was called on to solve last night was so preposterous in every way it would have disgraced Midsomer Murders- a show no-one takes seriously, though heaven knows why not; it's at least as funny as this, twice as gruesome and entirely free of sentiment.

I won't discuss the details because of "spoilers" but I didn't believe in the murder weapon one bit. If they have a medical advisor, he/she must have been on holiday when they wrote that script.

I don't mind the occasional episode about the characters rather than the plot, but there are only three episodes in the series and I feel like they did waste it a bit.

I got the feeling that Sherlock was just pretending to have feelings because he knew it was to be expected of him. The stag night scenes were fun, though.

I found it quite funny, and would have felt more indulgent towards it if it hadn't been quite so indulgent towards itself. And really, it was not an hour and a half's worth.

I didn't believe in the murder weapon either. Besides which, that kind of absurdly convoluted murder plot is not at all in the tradition of Conan Doyle.

The stag scenes were funny- too funny, I thought. They are in danger of turning Sherlock into a figure of farce.

I really loved the first two seasons - so I'm now worried about this third one. I think, if it contains interplay between the characters still, I'll be able to forgive its faults.

Though really, if this third season is focused on romping, overall it will be overshadowed by the first two.

I love character studies and I do like it when characters change over time, but that doesn't mean I still don't want to see Holmes' keen intellect and reasoning abilities on display.

I'd also like it if they made better use of Watson, and made him more of an equal to Holmes.

Again I enjoyed the ride and I think I'm just going to have to do that and not dwell on the details too much.

There is a feeling of 'but this is fan fiction!' when watching, particularly so this series, but then it IS fan fiction. And this is helped along by Moffat and Gatiss being fans before they are writers, here, I think. Possibly it's particularly noticeable to me this season because it's become more like fan fiction of itself, or seems so to me, rather than of the original. That makes it a little jarring.

Homoerotic relationships are in vogue this year. Everybody wants to write some kind of love story between a same-sex couple... usually with no actual sex involved because that would be "just to icky" for most audiences to tolerate.

I haven't seen "Sherlock" in awhile, but the last time I saw it, it appeared that they were driving heavily towards one of these sexless emotionally tortured relationships.

It's travelled a long way now from its origins. I liked the way the earlier episodes riffed on Conan Doyle, but this latest effort threw away the plot of The Sign of Four (which is a jolly good yarn) and kept nothing but the names Sholto and Small.

Conan Doyle's Holmes is entirely sexless- and, frankly, I like him that way.

I have read some queer theorists think that there is an implied relationship between Holmes and Watson that is just not expressed by the author. I think that it may be true on Watson's side, but Holmes seems like he is on the autism spectrum to me, and I'm not sure that he is able to respond to anyone's affections.

I haven't seen any of Season 3, but don't mind waiting till it streams on Netflix or Amazon.

I don't buy it. Holmes never shows sexual interest in anybody, while Watson- who eventually marries- has quite an eye for the girls. Doyle was writing magazine fiction for money; he wasn't pushing some secret gay agenda.
