Dr Who Christmas Special

I've given up trying to understand Moffat's overarching narrative- it's just too complicated- but I was pleased to see that he seemed to be tying up loose ends last night. If this means no more Crack in Time, exploding Tardis, Silence, Trenzalore etc I'm happy. All these things have in their time loomed out of the fog, briefly extinguished all hope and then- without resolution or explanation- faded back into it again. The succession of anti-climaxes and unfinished stories was becoming tiresome. The other thing he did was reset the canon about the number of lives a Timelord is allowed. I'm glad he bothered to do that; it needed addressing.

I haven't warmed to Matt Smith's Doctor but I can see that- objectively speaking- he's done a good job. I've no problem with him being somebody else's favourite. He was often very funny. The brief glimpse we had of Peter Capaldi's incarnation looked promising. He's older than anyone since Hartnell, he's intense, he has ferocious eyes and it sounds as if he's going to be Scottish.

We're about 10 minutes from the end even as I type.

Have totally failed to comprehend the change in number of allowed regenerations.

Still, Peter Capaldi has been dear to my heart since "Local Hero", so I'll cope.

I think what happened is that the Time Lords sent the Doctor a new package of lives through the Crack in Time because Clara asked them nicely. If only everything in life were that easy!

I'm looking forward to Capaldi's tenure. He's a terrific actor.

I'll miss Matt Smith but the new Dr. seems interesting. I'm just wondering if Clara will stay on as his companion.

I have also found the story complicated and confusing.

I understand Clara is staying on for the time being.

I thought it was twelve and that the Time Lords gave him a reboot from the crack to fight enemies again. I watched Capaldi on "The Thick Of It" and he was terrific in that, and i reckon will bring a more serious attitude to the tenure. I am glad that Moffat decided to tie up loose ends but also would like to see less overarching themes. I guess he is pandering to the American market which like overarching themes spread across episodes.

Nothing wrong with overarching themes, but I think Moffat has got into an awful tangle with his.

I thought that Matt Smith was looking a lot like Hartnell towards the end, hair-wise.

I wonder if that was deliberate....

I haven't seen it yet (no cable), but an old friend in New Orleans taped it and burned a DVD for me, which should be here on Saturday. So should my grand-daughter, who's only up to the middle of the Eccleston season, so I'll probably save it till she leaves on Jan. 3. Given what everyone is saying about plot complexity, I don't think I'm going to mind all the spoilers I'm likely to encounter.

Your grand-daughter has a lot of ground to make up.
