I've been drawn deeper and deeper into Masterchef '13. Anyone of the three finalists could have won- and I was hoping the judges would declare a tie. By this stage it was a lottery. My man Adam had a very slight wobble in the final stages- which seemed to be what happens to him when the pressure piles up- and it cost him. He's a nervy beast.  I've little doubt, though, that, give him a year or two and he'll own his own place and be collecting Michelin stars. I reflected afterwards that I'm about as likely to eat at one of the restaurants that serves this kind of high end food as I am to own a Damien Hirst.

"So complicated" said my mother. Well, yes. Do I admire the artistry or deplore the decadence?  That's a tricky question when you're both a socialist and an aesthete. Oscar Wilde would have known the answer.

As you know, I'm actually going to eat at Le Gavrouche in the spring (not paying for it of course) and I did enjoy last night's finale, but my favourite Adam as well, poor guy, he's his own worst enemy.

Whilst the dishes are complicated i really do deplore the decadence of them, so i guess that makes me a socialist.

Thing about Michelin stars that no one seems to realise is that it limits the chef to dishes which are (a) French and (b) pretty 'traditional' in the restaurant sense, so not even the wonderful 'cuisine grandmere' is allowed.

Arty cusine bores me, I have to admit.

Would you want to own a Damien Hirst? I'd rather own the ten Giorgio Morandis I'd get for the same price!

No, I think Hirst is horribly over-rated.

I wouldn't mind a Hockney.

I've met David Hockney- oddly enough at an exhibition of Giorgio Morandi who is one of his great influences. Nice chap.

I wouldn't mind one of his (smaller) works either!
