Below Standard

Sir Hugh Orde- who is- as far as I can make out- the boss of the policeman's union- says the behaviour of the officers who stitched up Andrew Mitchell "fell below the standard".

In my book falling below the standard covers things like pulling the squad car off the road for forty winks, or getting behind on the paper work, or filling your pockets with paperclips from the office stationery cupboard. Conspiracy and lying and bearing false witness come under quite a different heading.

I don't find Mitchell particularly likable but what was done to him was outrageous.

This is one of those manifest injustices that could get overturned with a certain amount of public outcry (like the recent decision to increase the sentence of a man who had sex with a 13 yer old girl whom the judge described as "predatory"). The right thing might be to start a petition on change.org.

You are right. A policeman who commits crimes is the last person to be let off the hook.

The police should be held to a particularly high standard. If we can't trust the officers of the law who can we trust?
