I liked the way the wisteria billowed over the fence but Mary and my mother said it needed cutting back so that's what we did this afternoon- my mother and I- she sitting in her wheelchair with a pair of secateurs, me on my feet with a pair of shears. It was very hot and three quarters of an hour of it drained me. I postponed sweeping up the clippings until after the sun had gone down behind the trees.

You need to hack it back if you want it to bloom again. Mine blooms happily a couple months after each pruning -- since we're constantly snipping off the odd bit to keep it in bounds in our minuscule back garden, we almost always have at least one scape blooming.

Do you reckon then we'll get more flowers this year?

If you just did it, possibly not, but you should have more abundant bloom next year. Also, the response may depend on the species / cultivar. We have plain old W. frutescens.

Yes, I've only just done it.

I've no idea what species this is. Probably nothing very exotic.
