Two Breakthroughs

A stocky blonde policewoman is calling door to door. "I don't suppose you saw anything of the dog bite last week," she says.  I tell her I wasn't even here. Afterwards I congratulate myself on speaking to a police without coming over all of a tremble.

Ailz tells Dot we'll be going back to Kent a day early. She says that's fine and she realizes we have other things in our lives apart from her. That wasn't the expected outcome but isn't it grand?

Are you thinking of selling up in Oldham?

I really don't know. My mother is going to need someone on hand for the rest of her life. She's 91 but comes from a long-lived family, one of whom- my great aunt- made it to 100. If we find our stay in Kent stretching out into years we might well think of making the transition. At present though I'm just taking it a month at a time.

Since we went away she's been getting out and about much more- actively seeking company. Perhaps she's coming to understand that our absence has been good for her.
