How To Make A Hearing Aid

My mother broke one of her hearing aids and needs to get a new one. We took her to the shop in Tunbridge Wells for a cast of her inner ear to be made.  The audiologist took a scoop of green putty and a scoop of yellow putty and kneaded them together,  put a tiny sponge in my mother's ear canal to protect the ear drum and then injected the putty mixture after it with a big fat syringe.  She told my mother not to talk because moving the jaw distorts the shape of the ear. The mixture took about five minutes to dry.

I've been thinking about hearing aids a lot lately as my own hearing deteriorates. It seems to me that it's only a matter of time before some clever person figures out how to use a smartphone and earbuds as a hearing aid and kills the market for those very expensive ones.
