True Crime?

It used to be the Park Hotel. Then it became a restaurant which never seemed to have any customers. Ailz spoke to a taxi driver who said he'd eaten there once and it was crap. It intrigued us. We used to wonder- as we drove past- whether it might be a front for something else.

Yesterday and today the building and its yard are sealed off with crime scene tape and surrounded by police vehicles- including a couple of TAU vans. A terse note in the online police bulletin informs us that a premises in the Greater Oldham area is being searched as part of an investigation into organized crime....

There was a pizza place in my home town that had good pizza and low prices. The staff was mostly recent immigrants from Italy. While my home town had a fairly good percentage of Italian background people, nonetheless it was a common joke that the place was a front for the mob.

A little while after I went to college, it was busted as a money laundering front for the mob. Supposedly it was also a quiet place to hide out family members who needed to lay low. The pizza was cheap because the place didn't need to turn a profit, at least not through the customers.

The pizza went downhill once they went legal under new management.

We don't have any idea yet about the kind of crime being investigated. I'm guessing people smuggling- because its a roomy premises where you could hide lots of people- but it might be drugs or even terrorism.
