He sits down to watch his wife give a TV interview. They'd agreed she would use it to shaft the Prime Minister. But what's this? She's shafting him instead. The traitress!  His fist tightens round his wine glass.

Surely he's not going to crush the glass. That would be just too corny.

Snap!

Oh, he just did.....

I'm as unfond of politicians as the next man but are they really all such reptiles? It would be nice if one could care about these people but one can't.

Are you a West Wing fan? Did you notice that the guys were called Babbish and Hoynes - as were two of the smaller characters in TWW.

No I never watched it.

But that's a nice touch...

'are they really all such reptiles?'

The present UK representatives of the breed?

In a word, yes!

Sounds a bit like The New Statesman without the laughs.

Some laughs would have helped. If you're going to make a show in which none of the characters is the least bit likable you really do need to make them entertaining.

You know, the "crushing the wine glass" thing may be a cliche and corny... but I've done it. Just snapped the stem, and didn't hurt myself or anything, but it DOES happen in real life.

She's a fine actress but it's a dull role.

I considered watching this, but based on the review on Front Row on Radio 4 and what you've just said, I'm glad I didn't bother. Instead we watched Scott and Bailey which we'd recorded. We're usually running at least several days behind.

Oh, yes. And managing not to show it on my face, while maintaining a politely neutral smile, so as not to cause a scene or draw attention to my anger. And then the glass snapped, and I managed to keep my politely neutral facial expression while I apologized, and yet the person appeared to notice that he'd gone too far, and stopped.
