Today's the day the Government's new welfare policies come into force (or at least the ones that haven't had to be delayed for reasons of incompetence) and as usual the only meaningful opposition is coming from the churches. When I was a kid there was this organisation called the Labour Party that could be counted on for that sort of thing. I wonder what happened to it.

I think it was the one I used to belong to before resigned over Iraq and the Kelly affair.

The sound you heard was my collier grandfathers turning in their graves.................

Me too. There are socialists out there - I've read some really powerful articles these past few weeks attacking the changes... But for some reason they don't seem to be allowed in party politics any more.

Politics seems to be all about soundbites now, and the papers twisting these soundbites so as to inflict the most damage. Maybe it's thought too dangerous to allow anyone possessing an ounce of empathy to be a politician in case they're betrayed into saying something that isn't bland?

I rather miss the days when political parties actually stood for something....

Our current poltical leaders seem afraid to take any position until they've first run it past the Murdoch papers and the Daily Mail and received their seal of approval.

They do seem to still be around, indeed, but as you note, not often given any prominence, versus the Very Serious Politicians.

But, when there's evidence to the contrary, it can be glorious - witness the Independent running a masterpiece of snark by Mark Steel, The poor spend all the money. Isn’t it obvious?
"In a couple of weeks, the economy will be put right.
Because at last cuts such as the “bedroom tax” and universal tax credit come in, so we’ll finally get some money back off the richest people in this country – the poor."
