Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme

We're off to the sea-side. Yes, I know, what a time to choose! Up until yesterday it looked as if the weather might stop us, but it's been raining overnight and the snow has mostly gone.

Specifically we're going to Scarborough. And, yes, that is the place Paul Simon sings about. Scarborough Fair was a fish market that drew fishermen and traders from both sides of the North Sea. It has a Norman castle and the theatre where Alan Ayckbourn premieres all his plays; Charles Laughton was born there and Anne Bronte is buried in the churchyard. It's one of those places. Martin Carthy- the guy who taught the song to Simon- lives at Robin Hood's Bay a few miles to the north. And a few miles to the north of Robin Hood's Bay is Whitby- where the Demeter came to ground. Inland lie the Yorkshire Wolds- David Hockney's landscape of choice.

We're booked into the St Nicholas- the High Victorian hotel that dominates the town from its crag. We've stayed there before- about ten years ago.. Back then it was in private hands; now it's a Travel Lodge. I'm looking forward to processing up and down its grand staircase again.

I won't be posting here for a few days. All being well I'll be back on Wednesday.

Lovely! Some time I'll do a Paul Simon tour of England. (My dad actually saw him playing in a pub on his pre-Sound of Silence 'tour of one night stands'.)

Enjoy - I have fond memories of that coast from when I lived in York.

What a lovely trip. And Whitby -- isn't that where all the vampire people like to flock?

Have a good time and bring back photos.
