Something I read on the Net the other day: an elderly military man arrested for cottaging in the good old days wistfully explained to the policeman who was feeling his collar, "It begins at school, you know..."

Which sort of backs up- albeit in an anecdotal manner-  the point I was making the other day which caused [livejournal.com profile] wemyss to blow his top.

The British establishment is largely staffed with chaps who went through the public school system. Hence institutionalized misogyny and pederasty. If you deny there's a link you're effectively saying that education counts for nothing.

I have visited the House of Commons. It took me straight back to my schooldays. Dreary neo-gothic architecture, high ceilings, long corridors smelling of farts and cabbage. A person passing from Eton (say) to the mother of parliaments by way of a Cambridge college would notice hardly any change in the ambient scenery.

The prefects at my old school (not all of them, of course) were corrupt, in love with their own privilege and crazy for hot boy sex. Are we to suppose they dropped all that as soon as they moved into the greater world?

Whoa, there!

Misogyny, sure. If you hardly get to meet women, you are probably more likely to regard them as an alien and threatening species.

Homosexuality - a speculation worth considering, perhaps. If the only available sexual partners when you are at the age of maximum testosterone are other boys, then perhaps you'll turn your libido in their direction. Maybe, in some cases.

Pederasty, though? That one needs a lot of unpacking. Pederasty normally refers to relationships between men and prepubescent boys, and there are two quite separate aspects to that: the power differential, and the sexual attraction to children. Now, if you're saying that a public school education tends to nurture a view of sex as being based on power - because older children can effectively demand the services of younger ones - then that's one thing. Such an attitude is certainly characteristic of abusers, and of many a shit who stays just the right side of the law as well. You would know more than I do about whether that's the way things work at public schools.

But to imply that public schools nurture sexual attraction to children is something quite different. Because all schools do that, by virtue of putting children together in the same room at at time when their hormones are spouting like a school of whales. I was attracted to children when I was at school, and so were all my friends. The fact that it was a co-educational comprehensive rather than a single-sex public school made no difference to that. And it didn't - as far as I know - turn any of us into paedophiles.

It was my observation that there was a power differential in all the sexual relationships I was aware of at Lancing. Older boys lusted after younger boys. I can't think of a single relationship between boys of the same age. Maybe they existed, if so they were kept well-hidden. There was a fiction maintained that we were all red-blooded heteros and homosexuality was weird and nasty and a taste for little boys was normal. All very fucked-up.

Wemyss is a wannabe toff. I doubt if he's ever set foot inside a real public school.

This is all about power. Many people find power very sexually arousing... in fact, I would say that most people have some sort of power dynamic woven into their sexuality in some way. The boys and men that you describe in school are deriving sexual gratification from their power. They may or may not actually be homosexual. They may or may not even be pedophiles. What you are describing is the stuff of prisons. And, yes, it is weird and fucked up, but this all has to do with rape behavior... all of it. And, rape is really not about sex, rape is all about power.

And, it makes total sense that, if one is raised in an environment where rape is accepted and condoned as a means to achieve and hold power, that behavior will continue into adult life. From what you are describing, it sounds as though there is a "rape or be raped" option for boys. I can see that being VERY damaging.
