Serious

"Serious questions," says David Cameron, Yes, certainly, - but not only for the BBC.

Jimmy Savile pervaded the British state and its institutions. The smell of him is everywhere. Did the princes, politicians and other high-ups who relished his company (Charles employed him as a kind of marriage guidance counsellor, Thatcher had him round to Christmas dinner, Ken Clarke gave him the keys to Broadmoor) simply like the cut of his jib or did they have tastes in common? Were they fooled by him, or were they complicit?

Purely coincidental, I'm sure.

Just because Charles, Clarke, the former Prime Ratbag of No 10, et al, seek to concentrate all temporal power in the hands of the right sort and their friends, justice and even common sense be damned, that doesn't necessarily imply that they also seek to exploit such differences in power for their own personal pleasure and gain.

As a loyal subject of the British Crown, you should know that it is the duty of those here below to always assume the best of our betters, and their intentions, else the whole conservative rationale is liable to come crashing down.

And we mustn't have that.

I spent much of yesterday poking around in the undergrowth of the Savile affair. It left me very jaundiced.

I can only imagine.

Do you recall the Marc Dutroux affair? I'd have said those rumors were far-fetched, then comes Savile and...well...you just don't know, do you?

Back in the good old days, a gentleman of parts could diddle all the kiddies his comparative wealth and privilege allowed, should he take a mind to. Deep economic injustice makes every market a buyer's market and it is to just such days that the conservatives long to return.

So, in a way, what does it matter? In the grand scheme of things, how could the added charge of pedophilia make these horrid people any more monstrous than they already are?

Yes, I remember the Dutroux affair.

As far as I can see those "good old days" never went away. Wealthy and important child abusers still mostly get away with it.

I fear it's true but then there's men like our Jerry Sandsuky, and his much beloved enabler, Joe Paterno, that are taken down in spectacular fashion and very much to most everyone's surprise.

The Red Beanie and Carpet Slipper Brigade may actually be running out of road, as well. Not holding my breath, mind you, but unless they succeed in making this a fascist state, as they're certainly trying their damnedest to do, they've squandered whatever stock of goodwill they might have enjoyed and their goose is probably cooked.

Tom Watson, the Labour MP who pursued the Murdochs, has just asked a question in the House about a paedophile ring in or connected to Downing Street. The authorities are working very hard to keep all this stuff under wraps but the volume of material released by the Savile affair may simply overwhelm them.

Oh my!

I saw rumor of this in one of the more rank digital fens, yesterday afternoon, without realizing that it was more than mere conspiracy mongering. If Righton was convicted in '92, that would be John Major's premiership, wouldn't it?

Oh my!

Savile has been named in connection with Haut de la Garenne and the Kincora Boys Home. He is rumoured not only to have abused children himself but to have pimped them to people in high places. There are lots of dots out there but God only knows how they all join up.

There's no secret about him being great friends with Prince Charles...

Our famous sailing PM has been connected with Savile in that regard.

Yes, indeed.

It's like...England is becoming Ireland. It's disorientating, quite literally, to witness. I'm used to entrenched child abuse and enslavement and corruption and everyone knowing and nobody saying anything in *our* history, it's just weird when it's someone else's.

I do feel that this thing has legs, and tentacles. It's not over yet by a long shot. And I'm glad the evasions by the BBC management are being checked and called out. I'm uncertain THAT would happen here, even now.

I'm afraid child abuse happens everywhere.

Savile had lots of friends and enablers. This story has the potential to become huge.
