The Caves Of Androzani
Some people believe this is the best Dr Who story ever. I can't think why. I find it glum. Claustrophobic. Lacking in humour and invention. Also a bit of a mess. Morgus- with those asides of his- is a Jacobean villain, the hairy mercenaries belong in a Schwartzenegger movie, Christopher Gale's masked loony has flounced in from the wonderful world of Andrew Lloyd-Webber and the magma monster is ridiculous and otiose.
Peter Davison is the mildest Doctor. Underplaying was a smart move after seven years of Tom Baker but I don't suppose the show would have got beyond its first season if William Hartnell had tried it.
