Update

The Lucian Freud portrait of Francis Bacon sold for £5.4 million- well under its asking price. That's still a hell of a lot of money.

For a sum closer to the asking price of that painting, I'd rather buy this:

Wait, I missed a zero...the temple is much cheaper!

Me too.

(Though it amazes me an archaeological site of such importance should be for sale on the open market).

Ah right, well put me down for ten of them, then...

Looks like the Bulgarian government is protesting its private sale, and the town of Balchik is trying to get the funds together to buy it before a private investor does.

I find his paintings of women difficult...he has painted his daughter in this 'porn' way as you say and I find that transgressive (is that the word I mean?) It has a taint about it, abuse of power, incestuousness, paedophilic????
As you say, he can't draw and they are heavily impastoed where he overworks them. Not a tiny patch on Rembrandt, but he has contacts, as you say...

Which is exactly what should happen.

He gives everyone much the same treatment- and his pictures of men are as uncompromising as those of women, and often foreground flaccid penises. I agree that there's something a bit "naff" about painting your daughter in the nude.

I think he's a good, minor artist, I like a lot of what he does, I just reckon his prices are too high.

i'm working up a good reply. it's been so long since i was an art history student. my critical analysis skills are rusty. but it's fun, and i've been meaning to write about lucian freud since you asked. more coming soon.

i also love francis bacon. (although i do agree that the portrait that sold looks like a moldy pear). perhaps moreso than freud. i'll get to that, too.

Excellent. I'm looking forward to reading it.

I don't particularly like Bacon, but I think he's a greater and more challenging artist than Freud.
