Encounters

I was walking down the road- on my way to the Meeting House- carrying a large pot plant in a carrier bag- when a Chinese lady with an empty shoping trolley came rattling up beside me and offered to carry the plant in her trolley. This was just too surreal for me to fall in with at first but she insisted- so we walked together into town, me swinging my arms freely, she pushing the plant in the trolley until we reached the centre of town and our ways parted. We chatted as we went. She told me she works in Brighton as a cleaner on the trains  and I said, "I used to do that once. Best job I ever had..."

It was a day for interesting encounters. There was a guy at the Meeting House- a guest of the clerk- who grew up in Chicago, was active in the civil rights movement and marched with Dr King in 1965. He and his Malaysian wife are still politically active- and got themselves arrested only last year for blocking a road in protest against the London Arms Fair....
