And The Cane
My mother appeared in one of my dreams. She had dropped fishing lures on the bathroom floor and I was picking them up. They were made of coarse wool wrapped round a base of clear plastic and represented moths, small animals and Dumbo...
Fabrizio and I were talking about my mother. He's 14 and was wrapping his head around the weirdness of someone he'd known having been born as long ago as 1921. He knows his history. "That's just after the end of the First World War" he said.
"Yes", I said, "And movies were still silent and the the biggest movie star was Charlie Chaplin".
"I know about him," he said, feeling his way carefully. "The hat... the little moustache..."
"And the cane," I added.
