Art And Morality
I'm happy to see Johnny Depp has a new movie coming out. I think he's a twat but I like his work- some of it anyway- and it's the work that counts.
If an artist does something reprehensible let the avenging furies go after him (if they really must)- as they went after Caravaggio- but let the rest of us not try to stop him from making things.
Good art is a gift to the world; when we cancel an artist we're robbing ourselves.
Depp's new film is a French film- in French- about a very French subject- the relationship between Louis XV and his mistress Jeanne Du Barry. I gather Depp hasn't needed to be dubbed- and of how many American actors would that be true? Vive la France. The French are more grown up about such things than us moralistic Anglos...
