That Was Quite A Christmas

Sejong's heritage is half Korean, half Anglo-American. And, of course, he's a British citizen. He has chosen an interesting time to be born.

I had to look up the name

Sejong the Great was a reforming 15th century king of Korea who tackled corruption in politics and religion, employed people of talent irrespective of class, reduced- in many subtle ways- the overbearing influence of China, invented a simpler phonetic alphabet to help spread literacy beyond the elite and enjoyed military victories over the Japanese pirates who were harrassing his southern coasts. He was statesman, scholar, writer, musician- and I can't think of a British- or even European- monarch who measures up. Maybe Alfred the Great- or coming nearer in time- a sort of composite Tudor with all the virtues and talents left in and all the psychopathy excised.

We took down the decorations yesterday evening. It's only Twelfth Night but Christmas seems a long time ago. There's been more going on in our lives- much more than I've written about here- and I can't see any respite in the near future. This isn't a complaint. I'd rather be busy than not.

We've had a run of cold, wet weather. This morning has been mild- and I've been out in the garden pruning roses.
