I mowed a bit then asked Mary, aged nine, if she wanted a go. I thought she'd give the machine a run or two on the area of the lawn I'd already cut- because pushing that thing is hard, there's a knack to it- and using it on thick matted grass takes strength and determination.

She ended up cutting about a quarter of the lawn- that is to say about twice what I managed yesterday.
