I like your point about him perhaps not being used to being turned down - and I really don't think this situation is any more serious than that.
Staff at Hachette didn't like it, some of their writers - including Dylan Farrow - threatened to pull manuscripts from their pipeline, and basically it just didn't make sense for them to publish the book. Meh. That's how businesses work.
