A Lullingstone Tomb

John Peche's heir was Percyval Hart and Percyval's heir was his second son, George- whose enormous tomb dominates the north chapel at Lullingstone. He died in 1587. He and his wife, Elizabeth Bowes, lie side by side on their slab- and- look- they're holding hands.

They are attended by four allegorical figures- namely

Rest

Labour

Death

And Resurrection

Hart's epitaph is pleasantly quaint. I particularly like the bit about him getting his knighthood off Queen Elizabeth even though she was famously "sparing" in the bestowal of honours.

No-one seems to know who made this remarkable thing.
